FAQ

About Our Mattresses

What is a factory second mattress?

Discount Mattresses Online sells factory second mattresses. These are open-bag mattresses that did not pass the manufacturer's final inspection for retail sale at full price. Factory seconds can include overstock, clearance, freight blemish, comfort trial, freight damage, floor model, cosmetic blemish, and discontinued models. The mattress itself is structurally sound — it just doesn't meet the cosmetic standard required for full-price retail.

Because these are factory seconds, the mattresses do not come with the manufacturer's warranty. They may also arrive with a "second hand" sticker on the mattress. We sell them at deep discount because we pass that inventory savings on to you.

We offer our own 30-day refund policy in place of the manufacturer warranty — see our Warranty Policy and Refund Policy for full details.

Why should I buy a factory second instead of a new mattress?

Price. The mattress is the same construction, the same coils, the same comfort layers as a full-price retail mattress — you're just buying it without the manufacturer's cosmetic guarantee and without the manufacturer warranty. Customers who don't care about the manufacturer bag being opened save 40–60% off retail on premium brands like Beautyrest, Sealy, Stearns & Foster, and Serta.

What if my mattress arrives damaged?

All mattresses must be inspected before the delivery driver leaves the premises. Any problems must be communicated to Discount Mattresses Online during the delivery, not after the driver has left. Once the driver has left, all sales are final. See our Terms of Service for full delivery inspection requirements.

General Mattress Questions

What are the various mattress dimensions?

  • Twin: 39" w x 75"
  • Twin XL: 39" w x 80"
  • Full: 54" w x 75"
  • Full XL: 54" w x 80"
  • Queen: 60" w x 80"
  • Cal King: 72" w x 84"
  • King: 76" w X 80"

Be sure you get a bed that is large enough to accommodate the space you need, especially if you share your bed. A king really does the trick if you like a bed with lots of room to spread out.

What does a mattress set consist of?

A mattress is made of three basic elements:

The foundation acts as a giant shock absorber, taking the normal wear and tear of nightly use. Foundations also lend added support, durability and, in the case of adjustable beds, flexibility.

The mattress core construction varies with the type of mattress. Whether the mattress is made of springs, air, foam, or water, this middle "core" provides support for the sleeper.

The upholstery layers wrapped around the core provide surface comfort. A variety of foams and fibers are used to improve cushioning properties and enhance the support of the mattress core.

What is the difference between firm, plush and pillowtop?

Every mattress is different. In general a plush mattress refers to softer level of surface comfort. A pillowtop mattress has a layer of materials loosely attached over the entire surface of the mattress resembling a large pillow. In most cases, pillowtops have a softer feel however some manufacturers produce firm pillowtops as well. A firm mattress doesn't have as much "give" as a plush or a pillowtop. There is still padding in a firm mattress but a lower gauge coil is used that creates a heavier stiffer wire.

What is a boxtop or eurotop?

These are different versions of the pillowtop style. The boxtop pillow consists of high quality foam as opposed to fiber and is generally thicker than the standard pillowtops and euro-tops. Euro-tops have an additional layer of padding sewn on the top of the mattress but unlike the pillowtop the edges are stitched down along the tape edge of the mattress.

What is the significance of coils?

Coils provide the essence of the support you feel in a mattress. Coils can also be found in box springs as well. Remember that coil count isn't necessarily the most important aspect in a coil unit. Coil concentration and construction play even bigger roles.

What are comfort layers?

Padding is the material on top of the mattress that provides extra cushioning. Latex provides extra resiliency and comfort and lasts as long as the mattress itself.

What are the differences between a foundation and a boxspring?

A foundation is basically a hard platform that rests beneath the mattress. A box spring is a coil unit that provides more resiliency and works with the mattress. Either way, when you buy a new mattress you should also buy a new foundation or box spring.

Do I need split boxsprings for my queen sized mattress?

If you have a narrow stair case or hallway leading to your bedroom, you need split boxsprings. Split queen sized boxsprings are half the size of standard queen boxsprings. They measure 30"w x 80" l and fit much easier through tight spaces.

How tall are low-profile boxsprings?

Each manufacturer is slightly different. Low-profile boxsprings range in height from 4½" to 6".

How tall are standard boxsprings?

Most standard boxsprings are 9" high.

Can I purchase just the mattress?

You can purchase a mattress only. However we do not recommend using an old or existing boxspring with your new mattress. Using a mismatched boxspring could affect the performance of your mattress and cause the mattress to wear faster than normal.

Are all mattresses one sided and why?

Most of the mattresses manufactured today are one-sided. Simmons manufactured the first non-flip mattress in 2000 and others in the industry followed the trend shortly thereafter. The one-sided mattress is made of high quality foams and fibers for durability. The no flip mattress is convenient and hassle free.
